October 1st Celebration of Guatemalan Children's Day in Memory of Wynn Cherry

Friends of FUNDALís Guatemalan Childrenís Day 2016 event [see flyer PDF] honors Dr. Wynn Cherry who served on its Board of Directors starting in 2011. She provided leadership as Chair of the Board from January 2014 until her unexpected death on December 22, 2015.

Wynnís passion, creativity, dedication and long career in the field of education benefited many children and families both in North Carolina and Guatemala. As an educator at Broughton High School (Raleigh), Wynn traveled to Guatemala numerous times with groups of students. She also traveled there with her family to experience the richness and the realities of life there.

Wynn was an inspiration to all who knew her. To say that she is missed is an understatement. Wynn always wanted to celebrate Guatemalan Childrenís Day!

2016 Training in Orientation and Mobility

Two wonderful teachers from FUNDAL schools in Guatemala, Yadira and Adriana, spent a week in NY learning about Deafblind Orientation and Mobility (O&M) and communication. Their hosts, Grace Bullen (founder of Friends of FUNDAL) and Gene Bourquin, provided tours and hands on training for the visiting professionals, focusing on basic O&M skills modified for children with dual-sesory or intellectual losses. Their itinerary included training at the Helen Keller National Center for Deafblind Youths and Adults, a public school classroom for children with multiple disabilities including deafblindness, and conversations with Deafblind adults and specialists in the field. The participants also had time to enjoy some of the sights, sounds, and flavors of New York City. After returning to Guatemala, Adriana and Yadira providing in-service training to other teachers, physical therapists, and other staff at FUNDAL to maximize the impact of what was learned.
